Car Nicobar Island The area around the airfield was the hardest-hit, with an area of approximately 5km of coastline virtually wiped out up to 500m inland. At least one road was destroyed. To the south of the airfield, there was a village that was spared the most severe damage, but a surge reached inland approximately 1km over a stretch 1km wide. The road circling the island was wiped out in an area about 40m long, and damaged along a stretch almost 800m long. There were a dozen small villages along the north side of the island that were damaged. Damage ranged from minimal to severe, depending on their distance from the shoreline. Along the south side of the island and to the southwest, there was evidence that the wave had struck, but not much indication of damage.

In Banda Aceh, the island area is totally destroyed, with fewer than five buildings or foundations remaining. At least one bridge was destroyed, and one of the two others sustained damage. All that was left of most of the houses were the tin roofs. At least half of those were covered with silt. The area inland from the island was not as hard hit - damage to most structures was in the 30-40% range, and few homes lost roofs.

Conditions: Myanmar (Burma)

There has been extensive damage in the delta area from the Tsunami. This has been spread out over a wide area. Due to lack of communication, it is not possible to know the numbers of deaths and persons left homeless.

In Yangon, an earthquake was felt and two new buildings under construction collapsed. We are not aware of any loss of life in Yangon.

At Ngwe Saung, a small wave only was noticed but no damage.

At Victoria Point, ten people were swept away in the first wave and died. The fishing fleet was out. We are awaiting news as to whether they were lost at Sea.

We suspect that the Islands of the Meik, Archipligo will have suffered like Nicobar and the Andaman Islands. There are dolphin breeding grounds on Salone Islands and we are assured that all the dolphins are safe. The sea area in the Meik Archipligo has many old sunken treasure ships and some of these became visible.

  • There is a shortage of food at the Camp operating in the Sunanda Upananda Temple in Koralawella, Moratuwa. Approx. 680 families are living there right now. They say the have sorted out ways of cooking the food and can help themselves if given dry rations. An aid worker there estimates a minimum need of 100 Kgs of rice and 30 Kgs of Dal per meal for all the families for the next 2 days.
    • Because of the proximity to Colombo, the people of Koralawella have been virtually ignored and left to fend for themselves. This need is urgent. Please contact Kelly on +94 777 313068 for more information and for directions on how to get there.
